If you’re inviting friends around, why not take the pressure off and have a potluck where each guest brings along a dish. Yule be glad to lighten the load!
With the weather being heaps cooler than the usual Southern Hemisphere festive heatwave, it’s the perfect opportunity to go traditional and cook up a hearty winter warmer.
Here’s some tips on how to spread the mid-year cheer!
Deck the halls
Set the scene by decorating with fairy lights, dust off the tree and play your favourite Chrissy tunes to create your very own winter wonderland.
Have the clown of the group write up the cracker jokes for the table. A creative and personal touch works magic!
Encourage everyone to wear their favourite ugly Christmas jumpers or festive hats to get everyone into the jolly Christmas spirit.
Organise a Secret Santa in advance of the dinner party to add more fun to the occasion. You can easily set this up online with guests email addresses with a set budget and wishlist feature. Create your gift exchange here!
Eat, drink and be merry!
- 10 Whole Cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1/4 cup caster sugar
- 1 roughly grated nutmeg
- 2 cups water
- roughly grated rind of 1 orange
- 1 apple, roughly chopped (skin on)
- 750ml fruity red wine (such as a merlot)
Heat cloves, cinnamon, sugar, nutmeg, water, orange rind and apple in a large saucepan over medium heat.
Bring to the boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.
Add red wine and simmer for another 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Strain and divide among serving glasses. Serve immediately.
After the food comas and present swapping, it’s time to rug up around an indoor pot belly with a glass of mulled wine or roast marshmallows around the outdoor fire pit until we celebrate again (very differently) in six months time!
